Our People
Geoff Treloar, BA (Hons), Dip Ed, PhD, Head of College

As a student I had some great experiences at the Universities of Sydney and Durham. In my role as Head of Basser College I am motivated partly by the desire to do all that I can to ensure that our residents have at least an equally memorable time in the student phase of their lives.
My present appointment is the culmination of a long career in public education. I began as a tutor in Ancient History at Sydney University, spent three years as a secondary school teacher, and taught in TAFE and at the Sydney Institute of Technology. Before coming to Basser I worked at Robert Menzies College at Macquarie University for twelve years, first as Dean of Students and then as the Dean. I have been Head of Basser for the last three years and feel very keenly my responsibility for ensuring the College provides a secure, stimulating and supportive environment for our residents.
I am an historian by profession and as a Visiting Fellow in the School of History I remain an active researcher. In 1998 I published a major study of the nineteenth century British New Testament scholar and church statesman, J.B. Lightfoot (Lightfoot the Historian, Tübingen: Mohr-Siebeck). I have also edited and helped to edit another five books, the most recent of which (with Bishop Tom Frame) is Agendas for Australian Anglicanism: Essays in Honour of Bruce Kaye (2006). My current project is a book titled The Disruption of Evangelicalism: The Age of R.A. Torrey, John R. Mott, Aimee Semple McPherson and T.C. Hammond, which will cover the period 1900 to about 1940 in the IVP series on Evangelicalism in the English Speaking World. I would be glad to hear from anybody interested in carrying out research through the School of History in the modern history of Christianity, especially in the cultural history of the Bible and the history of Evangelicalism.
Apart from my family, my other loves are cricket (now regrettably as a spectator), reading, movies, music and especially walking (a great way to process life as well as getting much needed exercise).

I was welcomed to Basser College as part of the Resident Academic Staff in January 2006. There is an impressive mix of people here with diverse skills, backgrounds and a positive approach to life at university. One of the best features of living at UNSW is the chance to better pursue opportunities on campus and make good friends in the process.
Having grown up in country New South Wales, attended boarding school, travelled extensively on completion of my secondary studies and lived independently during my undergraduate years, it's great to be part of this community and share common experience with others.
I've certainly enjoyed my time here completing a Bachelor of Science (Health & Sports) with Honours in 2004. I'm a current MBBS candidate and employed at the UNSW Lifestyle Centre as an Exercise Physiologist. I also work as a consultant in workplace and corporate health. My passions, outside work and study are sport, active leisure and travel.
I believe all residents can find a niche to pursue their academic aspirations, their interests and to enjoy this fantastic time of life. I look forward to sharing in the company and endeavour of the excellent people welcomed to Basser.
